The project will train 500 children on personal safety, abuse prevention, and reporting, while equipping 200 women with income-generating skills and starter support. By integrating a social enterprise model through baby care product production, the initiative ensures sustainability beyond donor funding. Campaign Story

Project Description The Safe Start Initiative: Protecting Children & Empowering Families in Nigeria is a community-driven project by St Winifred Charity Castle Foundation designed to address the growing risks of child abuse, neglect, and economic vulnerability among low-income families. In many underserved communities, children lack basic knowledge of personal safety, while caregivers—especially women—face limited economic opportunities, increasing the likelihood of exploitation and unsafe environments for children. This project adopts a dual-impact approach by combining child protection education with economic empowerment for caregivers. The initiative will deliver structured safety training to at least 500 children in schools and community centers, equipping them with knowledge on personal safety, recognizing abuse, and how to seek help. At the same time, 200 vulnerable women will receive practical skills training in income-generating activities such as small-scale production, trade, and baby care products, alongside business support and starter kits. To ensure sustainability and long-term impact, the project integrates a social enterprise model through the production and sale of baby care products, with proceeds supporting ongoing child protection programs. Community stakeholders—including parents, teachers, and local leaders—will also be engaged to establish child protection support systems and reporting pathways. By strengthening both the safety of children and the economic stability of families, the Safe Start Initiative aims to create safer communities, reduce vulnerability, and build a foundation for healthier, more secure futures for children in Nigeria.
